Carlos Lopez

Born in Madrid, Spain, Carlos Lopez began his ballet training at the age of 11 with Victor Ullate at Ullate’s Dance School. His teachers also included Karemia Moreno, Atilio Labis, Willie Burman and Zoltan Nagy, among others. In 1991, at the age of 15, he joined The Victor Ullate Ballet Company where his repertoire included Basil in Don Quixote, Albrecht in Giselle, leading roles in Allegro Brillante, Paquita, Les Sylphides, the Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux and Theme and Variations, the pas de deux from Coppelia, the pas de deux Le Corsaire and Diana and Acteon, the “Black Swan” from Swan Lake, Act III and the Bluebird from The Sleeping Beauty, Act III. Lopez also danced in ballets by Maurice Bejart, Hans Van Manen, Rudi van Dantzig and Nils Christie. With this company, Lopez toured to Argentina, Belgium, Cuba, England, Germany, Holland, Italy and the United States.

In 1996, Lopez won the Silver Medal at the Seventh International Dance Competition in Paris. In 1998, he was invited to dance at the 16th International Festival in Havana, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba.

Lopez joined American Ballet Theatre as a member of the corps de ballet in September 2001. His repertoire with the Company includes the Bronze Idol in La Bayadère, Birbanto and the Gypsy in Don Quixote, the Portrait in Dorian, Puck in The Dream, the Masks in Christopher Wheeldon’s VIII, the second sailor in Fancy Free, Alain in La Fille mal gardée, the peasant pas de deux in Giselle, the Profiteer in The Green Table, Fate in HereAfter, the Joker in Jeu de Cartes, the Lead Pontevedrian dancer and Maitre D in The Merry Widow, Beggar Chief in Manon, Njegus in The Merry Widow, the Nutcracker-Prince and the Toy Soldier in The Nutcracker, the Officer in Offenbach in the Underworld, Iago in Othello, the Devil in Petrouchka, Beranger in Raymonda, Mercutio and Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet, the Bluebird in The Sleeping Beauty, Benno and the Neapolitan Dance in Swan Lake, Gurn in La Sylphide, Eros and a Goat in Sylvia, a Youth in Three Virgins and a Devil, and roles in Amazed in Burning Dreams, Brief Fling, Company B, Concerto No. 1 for Piano and Orchestra, Le Corsaire, Désir, Dark Elegies, Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes, Glow – Stop, Gong, In The Upper Room, Mozartiana, Petite Mort, Sinfonietta, Symphonic Variations, Symphony in C, Within You Without You: A Tribute to George Harrison and workwithinwork. He created the role of Sin in Sin and Tonic and a featured role in HereAfter and One of Three.

Lopez was appointed a Soloist in August 2003.
