Iohna Loots

Born: Johannesburg, South Africa

Iohna was born and trained in Johannesburg, and later trained in Pretoria. She took part in the Prix de Lausanne in 1992 and joined the Royal Ballet School later that year.

At the School’s performances she has danced the leading Red Pawn in Checkmate (1993), the lead female role in Christopher Wheeldon’s Schubertiade, MacMillan’s Concerto and Bournonvile’s Napoli. She joined Cape Town City Ballet in 1995, her repertory including the Pas de trois, Neopolitan Dance in Swan Lake, Song Bird and Puss-in-Boots in The Sleeping Beauty, Micaëla in Carmen and the leading roles in Cho San Goh’s Configurations and Schubert Symphony.

In 1999 she joined The Royal Ballet as an Artist, was promoted to First Artist in September 2003 and Soloist in September 2007.

Her corps de ballet repertory includes the Neapolitan Dance in Swan Lake, La Bayadère, Giselle and The Nutcracker. Other roles include a Harlot in MacMillan’s Manon, Princess Stephanie in Mayerling, Ashton’s Les Rendezvous, the Spring Fairy in Cinderella, Dora Penny in Enigma Variations, Clara in Peter Wright’s The Nutcracker, Little Red Riding Hood and Fairy of Eloquence in Natalia Makarova’s The Sleeping Beauty, Givre in David Bintley’s Les Saisons, Jirí Kylián’s Sinfonietta, Effie in August Bournonville’s La Sylphide and the Fairy of the Song Bird and Little Red Riding Hood in the Monica Mason and Christopher Newton production of The Sleeping Beauty.

She has created roles in Jacopo Godani’s Aeon’s Run for the New Works Season in the Linbury Studio Theatre (2000), Vanessa Fenton’s Ad Infinitum (2000), William Tuckett’s The Wind in the Willows (2002) and David Bintley’s Les Saisons(2003).

During the 2007/08 Season, she has made her debut as Hunca Munca in Fredrick Ashton’s Tales of Beatrix Potter and the Female Goat in Sylvia.
