Ivan was born in Kiev, Ukraine and trained at the Kiev State Choreographic Institute between 1990-1997. He then attended The Royal Ballet School. He danced the Wolf in Matthew Hart’s Peter and the Wolf during The Royal Ballet’s Christmas/New Year Season at the Royal Festival Hall in 1997/98, Jean de Brienne in Raymonda Act III, the Bronze Idol in La Bayadère in the 1998 School performances. He joined The Royal Ballet as an Artist in September 1998, was promoted to Soloist in 2001 and made a Principal in September 2002.
He won First Prize at the Prix de Lausanne in January 1996, aged 15, and Gold Medal in the junior division of the Serge Lifar International Ballet Competition in October 1996.
His school performances in the Ukraine included the Blue Bird Pas de deux from
The Sleeping Beauty, Tchaikovsky Pas de deux, the male solo from La Sylphide and the Pas de trois from Swan Lake. He also danced the Prince in Cinderella with the Kiev Arts Academy, the Prince in The Nutcracker with the Kharkiv State Ballet School, the Mazurka from Le Corsaire with Ochi International Ballet in Nagoya, Japan. In April 1997 he took part in the Serge Lifar Festival of Dance and in November of that year he performed the Scherzo in the Stars of the Night Royal Gala. While still a student, he danced with The Royal Ballet in The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella and La Fille mal gardée, and Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet and Manon.
Since joining the Company he has danced Hans Peter in The Nutcracker, the Boy with Matted Hair in Anthony Tudor’s Shadowplay, Prince Siegfried in Anthony Dowell’s production of Swan Lake, Basilio in Rudolf Nureyev’s production of Don Quixote, Lensky in John Cranko’s Onegin, The Prince in Peter Wright’s The Nutcracker, The Bronze Idol in Natalia Makarova’s La Bayadère, William Forsythe’s The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude, Nacho Duato’s Por Vos Muero, Albrecht in Peter Wright’s production of Giselle, the lead Hungarian in MacMillan’s Mayerling, Jiří Kylián’s Sinfonietta, the lead couple in Ashton’s Scènes de ballet, the Prince in Cinderella, Rhapsody, the side couple in Symphonic Variations, Prince Desire and Bluebird in Natalia Makarova’s The Sleeping Beauty, Solor in her production of La Bayadère, MacMillan’s Images of Love, Requiem, James in August Bournonville’s La Sylphide, Mikhail Fokine’s Le Spectre de la Rose, Phlegmatic in George Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments, the title role in Apollo, first movement in Symphony in C, the title role in Prodigal Son, the title role in Glen Tetley’s Pierrot Lunaire and Jerome Robbins’s Afternoon of a Faun, Romeo and Juliet and as Oberon in The Dream.
He has also created a role in Poppy Ben David’s Siren Song for the New Works Season in the Linbury Studio Theatre (2000) and Wayne McGregor’s Qualia.
Television appearances include Scènes de ballet in December 2004.
