The Royal Swedish Ballet is one of the oldest ballet companies in Europe. With King Gustav III founding the company in 1773, the company has come along way since and has in modern times taken on a more vital role in Stockholm's art's scene. With it's mission to preserve the classics, it's a company with an immense classical repertory. The Royal Swedish Ballet, however, also functions as a comapany which strives for excellence in modernity; with not only a large modern repertory but also a sister company for the soloist called "Stockholm 59° North".
To one night master the 18th century style of ballet at Drottningholm and the other night to step into the present in a work by Twyla Tharp, Angelin Preljocaj, Niels Christie, Maurice Bejart, or Mats Ek has become somewhat of a signature for the Royal Swedish Ballet.
